The word 'care' is very broad in terms of describing a job role. There are different branches and types of care, as well as different sectors.

Entering a career in the care sector, for some, is an obvious and easy choice, but for others there might be a few perceived negative aspects, which may be enough to put you off applying.

The aim of this blog is to dispel those common myths and mental roadblocks, that are preventing you from applying for what might be your dream job!

“Personal Care is Putting me off”

If you are put off by the thought that working in care means wiping bottoms and helping people to wash, you shouldn’t be. Not every area or job within each care setting will incorporate personal care. So, don’t let the thought of personal care stop you from applying!  

However, where there is a requirement for personal care in your role, full training and support are provided to help you achieve this with regards to fully supporting a person with dignity and respect.

 

“The Pay isn’t Great”

If you think that the pay is poor, think again. Many employers offer very competitive rates of pay, which increases with experience and with career progression. There is usually the option to work additional hours. When teamed with the flexible working hours and generous staff incentives, a career in the care sector is definitely worth considering.

 

“I Don’t Want to Work Unsociable Hours”

It’s true to say a person’s support needs may not fit around a Monday to Friday schedule, and finish each day at 5pm. Most employers try to be as flexible as possible in terms of achieving a good work-life balance for their employees. For many people care and support work allows them to work more flexibly – fitting work hours around families or other commitments. Many hours and rotas are personalised to the people who require support, so it can be pretty much guaranteed there are hours to suit the majority of people. Certain hours and days often attract additional payments which recognise the ‘unsocial’ aspect of the role. 

 

“It’s a Dead-End Job”

Entering into a career in the care sector offers genuine career progression opportunities, especially for a committed and driven employee. Working up to a management position could then lead to management positions in other companies or sectors, and with transferable skills, the world is your oyster! So you really think of a career in care as a dead-end job, as in reality, it is completely the opposite.

 

“I have no qualifications...”

A career in the care sector is something you can enter into without qualifications, and you can gain qualifications while you’re working – and earning money. Many employers offer training and qualifications for free while you are employed with them. So, don’t be put off if you have no qualifications, instead you should see it as a great opportunity to get stuck in and earn some! 

 

“I Can’t Drive, or Don’t Own a Car”

Although there may be times when you have to travel from place to place, you don’t necessarily need a car to be able to do this. You could cycle or use public transport. Or, you could walk if it’s not too far, and benefit from the extra exercise too!

 

 

Choosing a career in care could change your life for the better, but more than that, it could change someone else’s life for the better as well. The people you will meet, the positive difference you will make; these things are rewarding, meaningful and worthwhile.
