Behind the Scenes: The Role of the Care Home Manager

A care home manager is responsible for the day-to-running of a residential care home.

In this blog we will take a closer look at some of the daily tasks and responsibilities of the care home manager, as well as how a support worker might progress to the role of care home manager, and what potential roles are available beyond that of the care home manager.

Different care homes will usually care for a specific client group, such as (but not limited to) older people, the terminally ill, or adults with learning disabilities.

There will be care home manager roles available in either the private sector, the public sector, or with charities. Despite the different nature of the sectors, the role will consist of the same, or very similar daily tasks and responsibilities. 


Typical Duties

Although a care home manager’s daily to-do list will likely look slightly different depending on which client group the home cares for, and which sector the care home is in, there will be some tasks which are fairly standard across any home.

A care home manager will be responsible for the care home and staff meeting legal requirements, for example with health and safety obligations. They will also be responsible for developing policies and practices within the care home.

Recruitment and training of staff will fall to the care home manager. They will also have to monitor business performance of the home and ensure that a high quality of care is given.

As well as managing the staff and the performance of the home as a business, the care home manager will have some involvement with the service users who reside at the home, and their families. This will be the caring side of the role, which will likely be what the care home manager used to do before filling their current role. Duties such as encouraging residents to take part in activities and join in the local community. A care home manager will also encourage residents to access local services available to them.

It’s quite a varied role, comprising many different skills.


Skills a Care Home Manager Needs

A care home manager will need to have great communication skills, show strong leadership skills and work well in a team. As well as the core transferable skills mentioned above, a care home manager also needs to have an analytical approach to the care home, since it is a business. So being able to understand and create effective budgets and business plans, and strong numeracy skills would be needed.


Career Progression

A typical career path to a care home manager role might go from support worker, to team leader, to deputy care home manager. As you can see, there is plenty of room for training, growth and development before the position of care home manager is occupied.

Beyond the role of the care home manager there could be opportunities to progress to a regional manager position within larger organisations. There might also be opportunities to become a care home inspector or a freelance care home consultant.

There are plenty of opportunities for career progression in the care sector, and with varied duties and different sectors, and client groups to work with, there’s no reason to ever get bored!

There is an increasing demand for roles to be filled in the care sector, especially entry level positions (personal assistant or support worker), but also at management level and beyond.
